Welcome to the second issue of NJ1134, a multimedia magazine created by students in the Online Journalism II course at Rowan University in Glassboro, New Jersey. Students from the Photojournalism and On-Camera Field Reporting courses also contributed photos and videos to the project.
The name of the publication refers to New Jersey’s population density – 1,134 people per square mile* – in the most crowded state in the nation.
Our mission is simple. We spend a semester talking to a few of the 1,134 residents who share each square mile of the state. We ask them who they are, what they are doing, and how they got here. We gather stories in a variety of multimedia formats and present them on a Web site. In the process, we hope to become better reporters and storytellers. We also hope to gain a fuller understanding of the places where we live. NJ1134 is published twice a year (May and December) and each issue has a theme.
For this issue, we chose the theme of “Jersey jobs” and the local economy. We wanted to go beyond the headlines about Wall Street and hear from local residents who have been affected by the economic climate.
We invite you to read, listen, watch, and contribute your own responses. You can post them on the message board or you can email them to us.

Thanks for visiting.
*Technically, the population density is 1,134.5 people per square mile (according to the 2000 Census data) but we couldn’t interview half a person. The next Census is scheduled for 2010.
